Devon & Cornwall scoop team golds

Devon and Cornwall have scooped team golds in the inaugural 2017 England Athletics South West Road Running Championships 2017

The championships were decided over two events – the Glastonbury 10k and the recent Great West Run Half Marathon in Exeter.

Although Wiltshire’s men won at Glastonbury, a particularly strong showing in the half marathon clinched the series for Devon by an overall margin of just four championship points.

In the women’s event, Cornwall’s emphatic win at Glastonbury was big enough to secure a series victory over second-placed Devon, despite the latter’s win at the Great West Run.

Cornwall team manager Emma Stepto said that the championship “really sparked the interest and enthusiasm of the Cornwall athletes”, while Devon team boss Dave Phillips added: “This has been an honour for the athletes and a good stepping stone for some up-and-coming runners.”

Tony Gale, road running coordinator for England Athletics South West, is already planning for 2018 when it will be hoped that the other South West counties, such as Avon, Dorset and Somerset, will support the innovation.

“It’s been great to see how these teams have responded to the challenge,” said Gale. “England Athletics is very keen to encourage road running competition at this level and we hope to get even more take-up in 2018.”
