New marathon wins over Cracknell

The West Country will have a new marathon in 2018 with the decision to launch an event in Somerset.

The Weston-super-Mare marathon and half-marathon will be held on Sunday, March 18 and is being backed by double Olympic rowing gold medallist James Cracknell.

“I started with a blank piece of paper, an inkling that Weston would make the perfect venue and a desire to create a brand new running event,” said Cracknell.

“This race will be fantastic. It’s a largely flat, achievable course and we’ll be there every step of the way to help with advice on training, nutrition and self-care.”

The event will be geared towards mass participation and offers at least one unique advantage over other marathons in the region as the organisers are confident it will be the only event in the world in which the runners will cross the finish-line a quarter-of-a-mile out to sea – at the end of Weston-super-Mare’s Grand Pier itself.

Details of the event can be found at westonsuperhalf.co.uk.
