Emma Stepto turned the clock back with a superb victory in the Simplyhealth Great Run Bristol half-marathon.
Four years ago the Cornwall AC international claimed one of the best wins of her career in the event, that was then one of the premier half-marathons in the country.
Now under new management the race doesn’t quite have the same depth of quality but that shouldn’t detract from Stepto’s victory as she paced her effort to perfection, taking the lead at eight miles and then stretching her advantage to over a minute by the finish.
“This was my target race for the end of the summer and the aim was to get inside 78 minutes,” said a delighted Stepto.
“I was just not expecting to win the race at all, so that came as a big surprise. I am really over the moon
“The 18 months prior to this have been pretty rubbish (Stepto has suffered a running battle with injuries) so I am just grateful to be back racing well again.”
Her time of 77 minutes and 42 seconds is her fastest for 30 months since clocking 73:30 in the Reading half to finish fifth in the English Championships that year and will give her great encouragement going into the winter.
