SOMERSET’S Lewis Gregory was unable to mark his debut as captain of England Lions with a win over Pakistan A in Abu Dhabi on Sunday.
Pakistan A won the first limited-overs match, putting on a sizeable total of 351-4 before bowling the Lions out for 164 to win by 187 runs.
Plymothian Gregory skippered the team and asked the hosts to bat upon winning the toss but Shan Masood and Abid Ali combined for a partnership of 276 to stamp their mark on the game.
The Lions struggled with strong winds, and the nature of having a big ground to defend exacerbated the problems of an unresponsive pitch.
In reply a number of Lions batters were able to get starts but the pursuit of 351 quickly became unrealistic. The two sides will meet again for the second match of the series on November 27.
