A superb catch by Marcus Trescothick gave Somerset the breakthrough with the first of the seven wickets required on the final day of the season.
Trescothick, adopting his new down on his knees ‘stance’ at second slip for the spin bowlers, snapped up Steve Eskinazi diving forward off Roelof van der Merwe 15 minutes into this morning’s play to leave the score on 43 for 4.
A partnership of 28 between Adam Voges and John Simpson followed before Jack Leach had the former snaffled by Craig Overton for 15.
Leach then trapped Simpson (19) in front to click up his 50th first class wicket of the season and Van der Merwe returned to the attack and quickly had Paul Stirling (5) caught by the bucket-like mitts of Overton to leave the Londoners on the ropes at 80 for 7.
The left armer then enticed Paul Harris into a top edge sweep shot with the score on 93 and George Bartlett made no mistake at fine leg.
The fat lady was clearing her throat when Van der Merwe clean bowled Tim Murtagh for 8.
And the final rights were delivered by Leach who removed Steve Finn as Middlesex were shot out for 113 off 53.4 overs to ensure Somerset’s survival in the County Championship Division One for another season.
Leach finished with figures of 26.5-12-57-5 and Van der Merwe 13-6-22-4.
