Adams is leading the senior pack

TAVISTOCK Wheelers’ Lee Adams will head into today’s fourth round of the South-West Cyclo-Cross League at Newquay in the overall lead of the senior men’s competition.

Consistent Adams moved to the top of the class with his third place in round three at Coxleigh Barton, near Barnstaple, where club-mate Phil Collings won from Peter Haworth (Team Tor 2000).

There was a bit of a celebrity ‘new-comer’ at the meeting.

Dutch-born Dane Margriet Kloppenburg is on the comeback trail after a short break in a professional career which has seen her garner top honours at national and international level.

Coached by former Exeter road and cyclo-cross pro James Spragg, the 29-year-old Kloppenburg has been joining the Sid Valley CC mid- week run to help sharpen her fit- ness, and she will be an interesting contender when she tackles the HSBC UK National Trophy Series, which opens at Derby today.

It was no surprise that Kloppenburg won the women’s race at Barnstaple, although Kingskerswell’s Juliet Elliott (Mid-Devon CC) did well to keep her within sight.

Lucy Sprowat (Rutrainingtoday CC), who finished sixth, is the current leader of that class.

There was a double for the Birchill brothers from Newton Abbot.

Harry (Southforkracing) enjoyed a second win in the junior section, while Freddy took the under-16 race.

The South West League is going from strength to strength, with encouragingly big fields at all the rounds so far, and it should be no different at Newquay’s Tretherras School today.

The two-tier course is fast, but there are technical sections with hurdles and steps. Enjoy!
