The boot was certainly on the other foot last night as Yeovil Town banked three vital league points with a 3-0 victory over Grimsby Town.

Amazingly, this turned out to be the fourth match this season involving the Glovers that has ended with one team finishing with nine men. In two of those, Yeovil were left chasing shadows as they had two sent off against both Crawley and Stevenage, while Port Vale were beaten 3-2 after extra time in the FA Cup tie at Huish back in December having had two dismissed.

Fortunately, on this occasion it was the visitors who found themselves reduced to nine as their discipline let them down almost from the first whistle. As early as the sixth minute, Mitch Rose was shown a straight red card by referee Charles Breakspear for a rash two-footed lunge on winger Jordan Green which left the midfielder needing attention.

Yeovil responded with half chances for Sam Surridge and Francois Zoko before they opened the scoring in the 14th minute when Green picked out Lewis Wing who fired a shot under Mariners’ gloveman Ben Killip.

Just before the interval there was more embarrassment for the visitors as teammates Luke Summerfield and Karleigh Osborne had to be separated after clashing with each other, with the latter receiving what proved to be a costly yellow card.

After the break, Glovers’ boss Darren Way handed a league debut to striker Alex Fisher who arrived just hours before the Manchester United game. The Mariners evening then went from bad to worse on the hour mark when Osborne brought down Jake Gray and was shown a second yellow.

From here on it was largely one-way traffic, with Man-of-the-Match Alfie Santos pulling the strings. Yeovil duly clinched the points ten minutes later when Rhys Browne poked the ball home after Wing’s shot had been blocked. The scoring was completed in the 76th minute. Kilip could only parry Tom James’ fierce strike and Gray made no mistake with the rebound.

There was still time for another new face, with Yeovil-born Ryan Seager pulling on his hometown shirt for the first time having arrived on loan from Southampton.
