Taunton Town moved a step closer to the championship title, and a place in the Premier Division next season, with a routine victory up at lowly Barnstaple.

The Peacocks took the lead in the 17th minute when striker Craig Veal conjured up a neat volley from a Dan Sullivan cross.

More chances came and went for the visitors who had to wait until the 62nd minute before the win was sealed when Man-of-the-Match Ben Adelsbury’s header from a Ryan Brett corner was hooked into his own net by Barum defender Sam Haynes.

The match, which saw the gap at the top of the table up to 11 points, was notable for two milestones; goalkeeper Lloyd Irish made his 200th consecutive appearance for Taunton who smashed an 18-year-old club record when they stacked up their 24th unbeaten league game in a row.

With 10 games remaining, six at home, 10 more points will guarantee the Peacocks the title. Next up is Saturday’s visit by mid table Larkhall Athletic who were beaten 3-2 in the reverse fixture back in early December, kick off at The Viridor stadium is 3pm.
