EFL Checkatrade Trophy
Attendance: 1,395 (71 from FGR)
FIRST half goals from Nathan and Connor Smith saw Yeovil Town, still bubbling from the news of the FA Cup fourth round draw which brings another visit from the star-studded Manchester United, book their place in the last eight of the Checkatrade Trophy for the second successive year.
Skipper Nathan Smith, who later received the sponsors Man-of-the-Match award, gave the Glovers the early advantage with his first goal of the season when he guided home Jake Gray’s cross from a short corner routine in the third minute.
The lead was doubled midway through the half when Connor Smith collected a pass from Otis Khan before curling home an exquisite left foot dipping effort from the angle of the penalty area.
The hosts, who gave a full debut to Liverpool loanee Corey Whelan, were clearly on top now and went close to adding a third before the interval when left back Tom James’ free kick clipped the crossbar.
Half chances came and went at both ends after the interval none were taken, but the Glovers had done more than enough to secure their place in the hat for tomorrow’s (Thursday) quarter final draw – full list; Fleetwood Town, Oldham Athletic or Leicester City U21, Oxford United, Peterborough United, Chelsea U21, Lincoln City and Yeovil Town.
