Axe Cliff Golf Club Seniors in action...

THE AXE Cliff Golf Club Seniors completed the 4th and final round of their prestigious Masters competition.

The course was in great shape just like Augusta, but so dry with the ball running a mile so difficult to stop near the pin.

Adrian Bishop, last year’s champion, had a five shot lead going into this final round with Mick Swann close on his heels. Swann managed to pull two shots back with a fine 74 from Bishop’s 76 enough to retain his trophy with an overall 288 nett averaging a remarkable nett 72. Neil Moorcraft was third with 296.

The final round was closely fought with three players all tied on nett 72 but separated on count back with Richard Orsman 1st, Brian Thompson 2nd and Bill Polley 3rd with no twos recorded.

From an original field of some 40 players only 12 finished all four rounds showing what a difficult competition it is.

Meanwhile, a good contingent of seniors, wearing lots of sun cream, competed for the Harris Tankard in a stableford format.

The winner was Nigel Garwood with an excellent 42 points equivalent to six below his handicap which was subsequently reduced from 17 to 15. Alan Vincent took second spot on count back, from Adrian Bishop with a 35 points.
