DEVON’S international hockey ace, Giselle Ansley, stars in a new campaign launched by England Hockey to help promote this summer’s women’s World Cup on home soil.
A series of videos illustrate the ways in which relatives play a pivotal role in supporting hockey players.
Ansley, who stars in the #BehindEveryGreatPlayer campaign with her mum Sue, told England Hockey:
“I was introduced to the sport of hockey almost from birth – my mum used to take me to games in my pram.
“From my first moments playing hockey, my mum has always been right by my side supporting me through thick and thin.”
Olympic gold medal winner Ansley, who started playing hockey at Paignton Junior Hockey Club, developed her game at Plymouth Marjon Hockey Club with the support of her family and club coaches.
She now has over 100 international caps for England and Great Britain.
Clifton Robinson’s England Hockey captain Alex Danson said: “We work tirelessly on and off the field in preparation for incredible tournaments like our home World Cup but perhaps something we don’t acknowledge well enough are the amazing people behind the scenes; whether it’s our family, friends, volunteers or coaches, the list is endless.
“It’s their passion, dedication and the time they give us which really is the absolute bedrock to our success as players and also as people.”
England Hockey’s strategic mission is to leverage hosting the World Cup to enhance the public perception of hockey across the country.
Since London 2012, the number of young girls playing the sport has doubled and it is hoped that hosting the event will continue to grow the sport in 2018 and beyond.
The Hockey Women’s World Cup takes place in London from July 21 to August 5 at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
