BRINGING HOME THE BACON

West Country butcher takes 'Diamond Award' for his bacon...

A WEST Country butcher has brought home the bacon.

Barrett Brothers of Crewkerne is celebrating after winning a ‘diamond award’ for its bacon in the UK competition for craft butchery products – The Smithfield Awards.

The event, held annually by the Q Guild of Butchers, recognises and rewards the excellent products produced by the best butchers in the country.

Gary Pocock, whose winning product was streaky bacon with Guinness and black treacle, was awarded his trophy by BBC broadcaster and food expert, Nigel Barden at a luncheon ceremony in London.

Gary said the bacon is a “very tasty combination of sweet and brew which enhances the already tasty free range pork.”

Artisan butchers from across Britain were recognised in 18 other categories, which ranged from traditional pork sausages, burgers, pies and bakery, and bacon to ready meals, gluten-free products and beef and lamb products in Scotland, Wales and England.

The awards were judged blind by an independent panel of international food and meat industry experts.

Barrett Bros was also awarded gold medals for home cured gammon steak, cracked black pepper sausage and red onion and its sage pork sausage.
