Thomas leaves Bristol to help out Dragons

Tight-head prop Nicky Thomas, who has been on loan at Bristol from Scarlets, has joined Dragons until the end of January as cover after Brok Harris was ruled out for four months following shoulder surgery, writes John Harding.

Swansea born Thomas, 23, played for Wales under-20s for two seasons and returned to Wales from Gloucester by signing for the Scarlets last autumn.

He played eight games for them before going out on loan to Bristol at the start of the current campaign. Thomas also played five times for the Ospreys before graduating through Hartpury College academy to join Gloucester.

He was not registered in time for Friday’s European Challenge Cup clash with Newcastle Falcons.

Dragons head coach Bernard Jackman said: “Nicky had been at Bristol over the past few months and he made a big impression on and off the pitch there.

“He played with a lot of our players at age grade level and is one of the best scrummaging tight-heads around.” Jackman has continued his team building for next season by recruiting scrum-half Rhodri Davies from Rotherham Titans. He left Wales after four seasons playing for Llandovery and was selected three times for the Scarlets.

Davies has gained honours at international level, representing Wales on the Sevens circuit, as well as previously playing for Wales Students and Great Britain Students 7s whilst studying Sports Education at Cardiff Metropolitan University.
