CORNISH Pirates hooker Sam Matavesi has joined French giants Toulouse on loan.

The 27-year-old Fiji international has signed for the Top 14 club to the end of June, however, he will return to England to play for the Royal Navy.

Matavesi is contracted with the Pirates for the next two seasons after agreeing a new deal at Christmas and the Championship club insist his switch across the Channel is only a short-term move.

Pirates’ co-coach Alan Paver has said: “We are delighted for Sam that he has the opportunity to go over to France and play for Toulouse, with the prospect to be involved in final stages of the Top 14 this season and possibly some European action.

“I think it is such a massive thing for a young player to have these experiences and we are more than happy to let him go off and sample that.

“However, we are expecting him back for pre-season so all supporters out there should be at ease, and like he did international-wise I think when he goes away and comes back he’ll be a better player and a better man for it.”
